History and Mission

Concerts on The Slope was inspired by the shared vision of cellist Benjamin Larsen, the parish of St. John’s Episcopal Church, its former rector, Father Clark Powers, and its music director, Cryder Bankes, to provide accomplished emergent performers with something that can be difficult to come by performance opportunities.
Beginning in March 2012, talented musicians each month have brought a wide variety of repertoire and remarkably diverse musical styles to historic St. John’s Church, located in one of the most scenic and culturally active neighborhoods in the city—Park Slope, Brooklyn.
This series, organized by Benjamin Larsen, is affiliated with the music program of St. John’s and would not be possible without the gracious support and volunteer work of Cryder Bankes, who helps organize and introduces each program, and works tirelessly to promote the series through word of mouth, print, broadcast and social media.
Other volunteers include Karen Larsen, who formats the programs from her home in Rhode Island, Jerry Kajpust, who designed and maintains our new website and is responsible for social media promotion, Susan Maldovan, a writer and editor who assists with grant writing and communications, our talented graphic designer, Maria Moyser, and members of St. John’s parish, who help with refreshments, lighting, and preparing the space for each concert.
This is a great opportunity to catch some rising stars, and say you heard them before they were big! If you’re in Brooklyn, you already have an idea of how convenient it is to get to St. John’s, but if you're not familiar with Brooklyn, you probably don’t know how easy it is. Take a look at the directions page, and you’ll see that it’s a five-minute walk from some of the most accessible trains in the city.
As of September 2015, Concerts on the Slope, Inc. is a non-profit organization and is exempt from taxation under section 501(c)3 of the IRS Code.  All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
We're looking forward to our 2018 season and hope that you'll join us to experience outstanding performances of wonderful music at Concerts on the Slope!
